Matter: A clean, minimalist read-later app
Coming from Readwise Reader, Matter feels much cleaner and less cluttered.
Read-later apps like Pocket and Instapaper have been around for quite some time.
The idea of saving articles or newsletters to read later has always appealed to me for two reasons.
It prevents me from over-consuming content.
I enjoy a better reading experience in a dedicated app.
My go-to app now is Matter.
Coming from Readwise Reader, Matter feels much cleaner and less cluttered, making it simple to pick up something to read.
Don't get me wrong.
Readwise Reader is by far the most powerful read-later app I've used and those who use Readwise love its seamless integration.
It mainly depends on personal preference.
Besides the cleaner layout and build of the app, I also enjoy Matter's neatly built-in AI-powered features: "Summarize" and "See more content like this."
You can pull down inside an article before diving deep to get a summary of its contents.
After reading an article, you can swipe up to see similar content with a neat indicator showing the percentage match.
It's useful to hear different angles or perspectives on the topic you're researching and learning about. However, I believe it would also be helpful to see articles with opposing views on the same topic.
Matter also caters to those who prefer to consume content in audio format.
The text-to-speech feature is decent, allowing you to listen to all your saved articles one after another in your queue, hands-free.
Matter is available on the web and as an iOS app for iPhones and iPads.
The platform offers both free and premium versions.
The free version includes basic read-it-later features, allowing you to save unlimited types of content to your library.
Premium members enjoy additional features such as HD text-to-speech, fluid highlighting, and note-taking integrations.
