How to achieve a minimal Mac setup
7 strategies for creating a calmer, more organized digital workspace.

Personal computers have enabled us to do so much more, but when they are cluttered and filled with distractions, they can derail our focus.
Here are 7 strategies to help you create a calmer, more organized Mac setup.
Simplify Your File Management
To simplify digital file organization, you can adopt a framework like the PARA method to organize your files into just four categories.
Then, regularly process and clear your desktop and downloads by deleting unnecessary files or moving them to the PARA folders.
You can find a more detailed guide on setting up your PARA folders here.
Declutter Your Dock
Make sure your dock contains only essential apps that you use daily. Then, pair it with the following personal recommendations for a cleaner setup.
First, empty the trash regularly to free up space.
Second, if you mostly use Spotlight or an alternative like Raycast to open apps, consider removing Launchpad from the dock.
Third, enable automatic hiding to keep your dock out of sight when not in use.
Lastly, as an optional step, customize the app icons on your dock. I personally use Notion-style icons for a cleaner and more cohesive look.

Hide Menu Bar Items
Is your menu bar cluttered with apps and widgets?
An app like Bartender can help declutter your menu bar by hiding less important apps.
It transforms that messy horizontal stack of menu bar items into a simple three-dot menu that reveals hidden items when needed.
Organize Your Browser Tabs
Like your desktop, browser tabs can quickly pile up and derail your focus.
The author recommends using the Arc browser and organizing it with the PARA method.
You can create 4 Spaces in Arc for Projects, Areas, Resources, and Archive, then organize your tabs and folders into the relevant Space.
Set a (Dynamic) Minimalist Wallpaper
A minimalist Mac setup isn't complete without a minimalist wallpaper.
But when using a custom wallpaper, you might miss one key feature from Apple's default wallpapers:
The automatic switching between light and dark versions from day to night.
Thanks to a free Mac app called Equinox, you can now easily create your own dynamic wallpaper that follows your system appearance.
Change Your Accent Color
The accent color is a theme color applied to views and controls on your Mac.
In System Settings, search for "Accent" to find a selection of colors you can choose from. By default, it's set to multicolor.
Choose graphite as your accent color for a cleaner, more minimalist look across your Mac.
Use a Minimal Screensaver
Instead of using the colorful default screensavers, consider a custom minimalist option like the Fliqlo flip clock screensaver.
You can set up a hot corner to activate your screensaver before you leave your desk or take short breaks.
This keeps your Mac setup looking clean and functional, even while idle.
